Dear Engineer

Can Plastic Be Made From Plants?

Once upon a time, a team of innovators asked a group of scientists if it was possible to make plastic from plants—and it turns out, it was!

A few years later, here we are with Liquidplant: a 100% plant-based, performance alternative to plastic.

How did we do it? Well, that’s top secret, but we thought we’d shine a light on the brilliant minds behind it.

Ready? Let’s go!

What was the "Aha!" moment that made you realize Liquidplant was possible?

“I’m not sure there was a single ‘aha’ moment. Liquidplant is the result of years of steady progress. Our goal was to create a 100% biobased topcoat with the durability of polyurethanes, and step by step we developed the fully plant-based plastic alternative you see today.” - vH Director of Innovation

100% biobased plastic

What’s one common misconception about plastic that you’d love to clear up?

“That recycling can address the plastics crisis. The sorting process isn’t economically feasible, and many types of plastic will never be recyclable. Addressing the problem needs to start from the source: reducing consumption and plastic demand while replacing the most essential plastics with smarter, sustainable materials.” - vH Material Scientist

If Liquidplant could talk, what do you think it would say?

“Plastic, it’s time for you to retire. I’ve got it from here!” - vH Senior Polymer Chemist

Why is Liquidplant so groundbreaking in the world of Innovation?

“Liquidplant is the first 100% bio-based elastomer that can truly replace polyurethane. It performs across a wide temperature range (-40°C to 100°C, while balancing flexibility and strength. There are zero VOC or plasticizers, and we’ve yet to see another plant-based “plastic” that performs at this level.” - vH Director of Innovation

What would you secretly or not so secretly love to see Liquidplant made into?

“Probably a videogame controller. I think the soft, velvety surface would feel nice in the hand.” - vH Senior Polymer Chemist
