Biodegradation Technology

Our goal at von Holzhausen is to design sustainable material with minimal environmental impact that consider the entire product life cycle. That’s why we use a proprietary technology in all of our formulations. This technology causes plastic to biodegrade* through a series of chemical and biological processes in a landfill or ocean environment.

*Biodegradation rates of our materials are measured according to the ASTM D5511 test method.
Actual biodegradation rates will vary according to the solid content, moisture, and temperature levels in the landfill.

How Our Technology Works

How the Additive Works

How Our Technology Works

A. Biofilm

B. Microbes

Ingredients

Ingredients in our technology allow the formation of a coating called biofilm to form on the material.

Process

The biofilm is made up of micro-organisms which penetrate the material.

Ingredients

Other ingredients in our technology cause the molecular structure of the material to expand, allowing the microbes in.

Process

The microbes eat the material on a molecular level, accelerating biodegradation.

*Please note that regulation in California prohibits the sale of plastic products that are labeled with the terms “biodegradable”. The law also prohibits language that implies in any way that the item will break down, biodegrade or decompose in a landfill or other environment. These restrictions apply to all sales in the State of California including online.
