The in-house Tesla Design, Engineering and Manufacturing teams used their collective expertise and creativity to develop a Mechanical Ventilator. We identified this opportunity to be helpful by supplementing the growing global demand for this type of medical equipment during the Covid 19 pandemic.
With a huge sense of urgency and In order to improve the development timeline, we used automotive components directly from our parts bins (Model 3/Model Y touch screen for example). This strategy allowed us to not encroach on the current ventilator component supply chain as well as allowing us to leverage existing assets.
The design of the ventilator had to be minimal and easy to manufacture using production methods that do not require long tooling lead times. The result is a highly functional, clean and pure design that will ultimately save lives.
